New School Year Cards: A Welcome-Back the Whole Class Can Sign

Four cards worth sending in September

• Welcoming a new teacher. Starting with a new class is daunting from the front of the room too. A card from thirty families before day one is a genuinely warm way in.
• Thanking last year's teacher. If July got away from you — and it usually does — September is not too late. Arriving unexpectedly often makes it land harder.
• Welcoming new starters. A card signed by the children already in the class, for the one joining mid-year, does more than any assembly announcement.
• Support staff nobody thinks of. Teaching assistants, the office team, the caretaker, the crossing patrol. They almost never get a card, which is exactly why one lands.

Why the paper card is the hard way

Anyone who has run a class card knows the routine: buy the card, send it round with one child, chase it for two weeks, discover eleven families never saw it, and hand over something signed by half the class in three different pens.

One link in the class WhatsApp group solves all of it. Parents sign from their phone in the school run queue. Nobody needs an account, nobody needs the app, and you can see who has signed without asking anyone.

Organising it in a class group chat

• Post the link twice. Once when you start it, once the evening before it closes. Two messages is enough; more and people mute you.
• Set a closing date. A deadline three or four days out gets more signatures than an open-ended one, because it stops "I will do it later" from being true indefinitely.
• Say who it is for and from. "For Mrs Doyle, from all of Year 3" saves twenty replies asking.
• Let children write their own. Type what they say verbatim, spelling and all. Those are the messages teachers keep.
• Print it if you like. Download the finished card as a PDF and hand over a paper copy on the day, with everything already collected.

Timing it

For a welcome card, aim to hand it over in the first week — it is a greeting, and a greeting in October is just a card. For thank-yous to last year's staff, the first fortnight is ideal, while everyone still remembers the year that just finished.

If you are the one organising, start it now rather than on the first morning of term. The week before is the only quiet week you will get.

What to write

Specific beats effusive. "Thank you for how patient you were with Sam's reading" is worth more than "best teacher ever", and it is the sort of thing teachers actually reread. If you are stuck, name one moment from the year and stop there.
